Soccer in '98-99

This year's soccer season, like everything else, was but a shell of its former self. Yet the soccer players of Newman, like true warriors, did not let the turbulant academic times get them down. Lead by their coach, Mr. D'Aquila, they struggled valiently to wring a half-decent season out of the few days that were available to them.

The girls league had a mere 5 teams in their division. Unfortunately, 2 of these teams just happened to be the best in the league :-( As a result of the time constraints, each team in the league only played a single game against every other team. Our team did well, considering the circumstances and came within a hair's breath of making it to the playoffs as 2nd seed, but was ultimately ranked 3rd. Laurie Stevens sustained an injury during the season and there was no dedicated goalie, which didn't help matters much either.

The boys league had an even worse turnout but Newman was one of only 4 schools in the division to field a team. Each team faced every other one twice. Our team lost to Neil McNeil in the first round of the playoffs after narrowly besting them during the regular season, such as it was. Unlike the girls division, though, the teams in the boys division were well matched and every game could have gone either way.

The only major letdown for Mr. D'Aquila was the fact that there were no exceptional players discovered this year.
